  1. Japan's educational system is based on a high level of motivation to learn and a competitive spirit. One symbol of this is the "chugakugaku juken," or junior high school entrance examination, in which students compete for admission to (mostly) private junior high schools throughout the country.
  2. The junior high school entrance examination is generally held around February of the last year of elementary school (6th grade). The examinations cover a wide range of subjects, including math, Japanese, science, and social studies, and students solve problems that require extensive knowledge and advanced thinking.
  3. Entering a private junior high school is widely recognized as a path to a quality educational environment and an integrated education that leads to high school and university. For this reason, the junior high school entrance examination is often the first major challenge (chousen) for children.
  4. At the same time, however, the rigorous days of study leading up to the entrance examinations can put tremendous pressure on students and their families, sometimes causing health and psychological problems. Tokyo is a particularly competitive area for entrance examinations, and students aiming to take junior high school entrance exams often start attending cram schools in the lower grades of elementary school. It is also said that many students in the upper grades study for one to three hours on weekdays and as much as five hours on weekends and holidays.
  5. While the Japanese junior high school entrance exam fosters a sense of independence and responsibility in children, it also brings undue stress as a result of competition and pressure. This demonstrates the difficulty of maintaining a balance between the quality of education and the mental health of students.
  6. How future Japanese society will solve this problem and balance quality education and children's well-being is a major challenge for the future. New attempts and reforms emerging from educational scene will provide important suggestions for the direction of education in Japan in the future.
