神無月は、日本の旧暦で10月を指し、現在の暦である新暦では11月頃にあたります。実は、神無月という呼び名には面白い由来があるのです。
日本では昔から、全国各地の神様が、旧暦の10月に現在の島根県出雲市に位置する出雲大社に集まると考えられてきました。つまり、出雲以外の場所では神様が留守になってしまうため、神様がいない神無月と呼ばれるようになったのです。
さらに面白いのが、神様が集まる出雲（島根県）では、この月を「神在月」と呼ぶことです。「在」という漢字には「いる、存在する」という意味があります。出雲大社では毎年、神々をお迎えする「神迎祭」や、お見送りする「神等去出祭」が行われています。
出雲大社に集まった神々は、恋愛などの「縁結び」を中心に、翌年の天候や、農作物の収穫などについて話し合うそうです。神々の集まりが、日本全体の縁を強く結びつけるという考え方は、日本独特の信仰と深い繋がりを持っています。
神無月および神在月には、出雲大社だけでなく、三重県の伊勢神宮の「神嘗祭」など、各地で伝統的な行事が行われます。この時期には紅葉が見頃を迎え、気温も涼しいことから、旅行や観光にはぴったりの季節です。

English Translation

Kannazuki refers to the month of October in the Japanese lunar calendar, which corresponds to about November in the modern (solar) calendar. In fact, the name "Kannazuki" has an interesting origin.
In Japan, it has long been believed that in October of the lunar calendar, gods from all over the country gather at Izumo-taisha Shrine, located in modern-day Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. Since the gods are absent outside of Izumo, the month came to be called "Kannazuki" (meaning "godless month").
More interestingly, in Izumo (Shimane Prefecture), where the gods gather, this month is called "kamiarizuki". The kanji for "ari" means "to exist”. At the Izumo-taisha Shrine, the "Kami Mukae Sai" (ceremony to welcome the gods) and "Karasade Sai" (ceremony to bid them farewell) are held every year.
The gods gather at Izumo-taisha to discuss topics such as relationships (including marriage and love), the weather for the coming year, and the harvest. The idea that the gathering of the gods unites all of Japan is deeply connected to a uniquely Japanese belief.
During the month of Kannazuki and Kamiarizuki, traditional events are held not only at Izumo-taisha Shrine, but also at many other places, such as the “Kannamesai” at Ise Jingu Shrine in Mie Prefecture. The autumn leaves are at their best during this season, and the cooler temperatures make it a perfect time for travel and sightseeing.
