Introduction

Today, we will learn how to use the Japanese phrase “Otsukaresama desu.” You may hear it at work or at a part-time job in Japan. It does not simply mean “I’m tired” or “You are tired.” In this lesson, we will read a short story about a student named Alice and learn when people say this useful phrase.

  1. "Otsukaresama desu" is a phrase people use at part-time jobs and at work. For example, when you meet a store employee while working part-time, you say, “Otsukaresama desu.”

  1. 仕事（しごと）が終（お）わりました。家（いえ）にかえります。その時（とき）、みんなに「おつかれさまです」と言（い）います。
English Translation
  1. Work is finished. You are heading home. Then, you will say “Otsukaresama desu” to everyone.

  1. 朝（あさ）、「おつかれさまです」とあいさつする人（ひと）もいます。

  1. In the morning, some people say, “Otsukaresama desu.”

  1. アリスさんは少（すこ）しびっくりしました。でも、「おつかれさまです」のつかいかたがわかりました。
