Etajima City is located in Hiroshima Prefecture in the Chugoku region, sitting in Hiroshima Bay. The city is made up of Etajima Island, Nomi Island, and several smaller surrounding islands. It is an easy side trip from Hiroshima City, reachable in about 30 minutes by high-speed ferry, which makes it ideal for travelers who want a quieter coastal experience without a long journey.
Etajima stands out for four reasons. First, it has strong historical heritage connected to Japan’s naval history, including facilities related to the former Imperial Japanese Naval Academy. Second, it is known for local specialties such as shucked oysters and citrus fruits. Third, access is simple and fast from central Hiroshima. Fourth, the calm Seto Inland Sea scenery supports outdoor activities such as cycling and marine sports.
Etajima offers a mix of history and nature. The Maritime Self-Defense Force First Service School preserves the atmosphere of the former Naval Academy site, with some areas open to visitors and a museum-like collection. Mt. Dabo and Tengu Rock provide dramatic rock formations and a scenic viewpoint, and the area has even been used for filming. Crystal Road is a rare tide-dependent walkway that appears only during specific conditions, creating the feeling of walking over the sea for a limited time. Mt. Chausuyama is known as the lowest mountain in Hiroshima Prefecture and becomes reachable on foot during low tide, with a panoramic view from the top. Mitakayama Battery Ruins are Meiji-era coastal defense ruins that were never used in combat, and the summit is famous for wide Seto Inland Sea views and striking sunsets.
Etajima’s food scene centers on local ingredients from sea and land. Etajima Olive Factory showcases the Hiroshima olive brand and lets visitors compare locally produced olive oils while enjoying meals made with local products. Oyster Cafe Etajima serves oyster-based dishes alongside other local vegetable options, plus café drinks and desserts. Etajima Shinsen Ichiba Amamo offers seafood and local farm products with warm, community-style hospitality. Shima no Eki Mamegashima is known for its “soybean udon” and playful menu experiences that make it a fun stop during a day trip.
Etajima is especially well-suited for cycling because traffic is light and the island roads have relatively few traffic lights, allowing relaxed riding with sea views. Rental options include children’s bikes and electric-assist bicycles, and the system is flexible because return locations can differ from pickup locations. Support is also part of the appeal, since help is available if mechanical trouble occurs during the ride. A model cycling course begins at Koyo Port and is designed so visitors can enjoy a full day without a car, combining cultural stops and local food along the way.
Etajima travel often involves ferries, rentals, and simple questions. To tell staff where you want to go, you can use “Koyo-ko ni ikitai desu,” which follows the structure of destination plus ni plus ikitai desu. To find the boarding point at a port or terminal, “Noriba wa doko desu ka” is a natural question. To confirm arrival time, “Nanji ni tsukimasu ka” is useful because it works for ferries, trains, and buses.
