English Translation
  1. The Yokozuna is known as the highest rank in sumo, and within the long history of the Japanese sumo, it is the most respected position. Historically (as of August 2023), 73 wrestlers have been promoted to this honorable rank.
  2. The salary of a Yokozuna is 3 million yen per month. However, in addition to this, there is the possibility of winning the championship prize 10 million yen at the honbasho (held six times a year), potentially exceeding an annual income of 100 million yen.
  3. The promotion process is strict, requiring certain conditions to be met, such as winning two consecutive tournaments (or achieving equivalent results). The character and ability of the promotion candidates are deliberated by the Yokozuna Deliberation Council, and unless two-thirds of the attending members approve, the promotion cannot proceed.
  4. Before a match, wrestlers perform a ritual called dohyō-iri (“ring entry”). However, the Yokozuna, being the highest rank of wrestlers, performs a special ceremony called Yokozuna dohyō-iri. In this ceremony, the Yokozuna wears a white rope around his waist and is accompanied by two wrestlers.
  5. Once promoted to Yokozuna, a wrestler will not be downgraded even if his performance declines. At first glance, this may seem like a lenient system for the Yokozuna, but there's a very strict aspect: if a Yokozuna cannot maintain a performance befitting his rank, he must not be degraded but retire. This is a tradition to maintain the dignity of the Yokozuna rank.
