The Appeal and Etiquette of Shrine and Temple Visits

English Translation
  1. Visiting shrines and temples to worship gods and Buddhas is called "sanpai." Today, I will introduce the etiquette and charm of "sanpai," a traditional Japanese cultural practice.
  2. Shrines have gates called "torii." Torii are gates that separate the world of the gods from the human world and are entrances to sacred places. When passing through a torii, it is proper etiquette to bow before passing through and to avoid the center, walking on either side instead. When walking along the approach to the shrine, also avoid the center as it is considered the path for the gods, and walk on the edges as much as possible.
  3. Before worship, there is a place called "ChŌzusha" where you purify your hands and mouth. After purifying your hands and mouth with the water from the "ChŌzusha", return the dipper to its original position, wipe your hands and mouth with a handkerchief, and bow to finish the purification.
  4. Finally, it is time for worship. The detailed etiquette for worship can vary depending on the region and shrine, but be sure to remember the basic "two bows, two claps, one bow." ①Stand in front of the main hall, straighten your posture, and make two deep bows (two bows). ②Clap your hands twice with your hands at chest height, with the right hand slightly in front (two claps). ③Return the right hand to its original position and make another deep bow (one bow).
  5. By knowing this etiquette, you can feel more deeply connected to the traditional Japanese culture and values through sanpai. If you have the opportunity to go for sanpai, please try to practice these manners.
