  1. 祇園祭は、京都市にある八坂神社の祭礼です。その起源は平安時代にまでさかのぼり、一千年以上の歴史を持っています。毎年七月一日～七月三十一日の一か月にわたって、疫病退散を祈って行われます。
  2. 祇園祭の中でも注目を集めるのは「山鉾巡行」です。山鉾は巨大で、豪華な装飾が施されており、その美しさから「動く美術館」とも呼ばれます。山鉾はすべて人力で動かされ、「辻回し」と呼ばれる交差点での方向転換は祭りのハイライトです。京都祇園祭の山鉾行事は、ユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録されています。

  1. The Gion Festival is a festival held at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto City. Its origins date back to the Heian period (794-1192), and it has a history of more than 1,000 years. The festival is held annually during the month from July 1 to July 31 to pray for the eradication of plague and disease.
  2. The most notable event of the Gion Festival is the Yamaboko Junko. Yamaboko are huge, gorgeously decorated, and are called “moving museums” for their beauty. Yamaboko are moved entirely by hand, and the highlight of the festival is the change of direction at intersections, known as “tsuji-mawashi”, in which the floats are carefully turned. The Yamaboko event of the Kyoto Gion Festival is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  3. In addition, the Gion Festival is also notable for the presence of “o-chigo-san” (young children). O-chigo-san are young children who participate in rituals at shrines and temples as “incarnations of gods and Buddha”. At the Gion Festival, a boy between the ages of 8 and 10 is chosen as the o-chigo-san and wears special costumes and makeup to ride on the Yamaboko. The o-chigo-san of the Gion Festival is a messenger of the gods and is not allowed to set foot on the ground until he has completed his duties. When he gets on and off the Yamaboko, he is carried by a person called “gouriki”.
  4. The rhythm and melody of the Gion Festival are played on three types of ancient musical instruments: gongs, drums, and flutes, the sounds of which echo throughout the city. Such music adds to the overall atmosphere of the festival and provide people with an unforgettable experience.
