Just hearing the name "Japanese sword" conjures up images of history and tradition in the hearts of many people. This beautiful weapon has developed over hundreds of years, gathering the essence of Japanese culture and technology.
The Japanese sword is said to originate from the technology of processing iron that was transmitted from China during the Kofun period (about 250 to 538 AD). At that time, the Japanese sword had a straight shape, but entering the Heian period, slightly curved swords began to be made. It was fundamental for samurai in the Heian period to fight on horseback, and a curved sword could be drawn more quickly, making it suitable for battle.
The Japanese sword also evolved with the flow of history, creating smaller and easier-to-handle "short swords" and "wakizashi," which are known to have been used by the famous swordsman Musashi Miyamoto. However, during the Edo period, the ownership of swords by non-samurai was prohibited, and the demand for them as weapons decreased with modernization.
In the modern era, the value of Japanese swords as works of art and collectibles has increased. Collectors both in Japan and abroad are fascinated by their historical value, beauty, and unique manufacturing techniques. Also, craftsmen who aim to inherit traditional techniques are still making swords today. The Japanese sword, as a symbol of Japanese history and culture, is respected around the world.
