  1. Long ago, there was no bread in Japan. Japanese people ate rice.

  1. In 1543, Portuguese people came to Japan. At that time, bread also came to Japan.

  1. でも、そのとき、日本人にほんじんはパンをべませんでした。外国人がいこくじんがパンをべました。
English Translation
  1. But at that time, Japanese people didn’t eat bread. Foreigners ate bread.

  1. 19世紀せいきごろ、イギリスじんやフランスじん日本にほんました。そして、ホテルでイギリスのパンやフランスのパンをべました。

  1. Around the 19th century, British and French people came to Japan. There, they ate British and French bread at hotels.

  1. フランスのパンは、かたいです。イギリスのパンは、やわらかいです。日本人にほんじんは、やわらかいパンがすきでした。

  1. French bread is hard. British bread is soft. The Japanese preferred soft bread.

  1. 1874ねんに、日本にほんのオリジナルのパンができました。あんパンです。

  1. In 1874, Japan's original bread was created. It was anpan (sweet red bean bun).

  1. いまでは、いろいろなパンがあります。どもも大人おとなも、パンがだいすきです。
English Translation
  1. Today, there are many kinds of bread. Both children and adults love bread.
