「因果応報」は、日本でよく使われる四字熟語の一つです。仏教の教えを表す言葉であり、日常生活でも耳にすることがあります。言葉の本来の意味としては、人は良い行いをすれば良い報いがあり、悪い行いをすれば悪い報いがあるということです。

“Inga Ouhou” (“Karmic retribution”) is one of the commonly used four-character idioms in Japan. It is a word that represents the teachings of Buddhism and is often heard in daily life. The original meaning of the word is that if a person does good deeds, they will receive good rewards, and if they do bad deeds, they will receive bad rewards.
“Inga Ouhou” means cause and result, and it represents the idea that the good and evil deeds one has done will later appear as corresponding results. "Retribution" means that one receives a reward with the same value as the act or cause, depending on the weight of the act or cause.
Currently, “Inga Ouhou” is often used to mean that if one does bad deeds, they will receive bad rewards. Most of the time, when someone does something bad and then something bad happens to that person, it is said to be “Inga Ouhou”. Therefore, even if someone does a good deed and then something good happens, there are not many situations where it is said to be “Inga Ouhou”.
The four-character idiom "jigou-jitoku" and the idiomatic expression "mi-kara-deta-sabi" are also commonly used expressions with the same meaning, but these two expressions are also often used in situations where something bad has happened, just like “Inga Ouhou”.
