Where Did the Japanese Language Come From?

  1. 日本語を話す人の数は、世界で約1億3,000万人と考えられていますが、そのほとんどは日本に住む日本人です。日本は法律で公用語を定めてはいませんが、事実上、日本語が公用語となっています。
  2. 日本語はいつ、どこで生まれたのでしょうか。実は、その起源は明確ではありません。日本は海で囲まれた島国であり、歴史的に征服されたことがないため、他言語との接触が少ないという特徴があります。一般的に言語は他の言語に影響を受け、共通点を持ちますが、日本語は孤立した言語とされています。
  3. 日本語が日本語として記述されるようになったのは、古事記（日本の歴史書）などが書かれた奈良時代（約1300年前）からです。それ以前は、古代中国の文章である漢文が使われていました。話すときは日本語が、書くときは漢文が使われていたのです。
  4. 話し言葉としての日本語は、約2000年前の弥生時代には完成していたと言われています。ただし、全ての知識や歴史が口承によって伝えられたため、その起源を特定するのが難しいという一面もあります。そんな中、日本語の祖先として考えられているのが琉球語です。琉球語は沖縄県などで使用される言語で、古い日本語の名残が見られます。しかし、現在では琉球語も日本語の一方言として扱われることが多く、日本語の起源を解き明かすには、さらなる研究が必要です。

  1. It is estimated that there are about 130 million Japanese speakers in the world, most of whom are Japanese living in Japan. Japan does not legally designate an official language, but in fact Japanese has become the official language.
  2. When and where was Japanese born? In fact, its origin is not clear. Japan is an island nation surrounded by the sea and has never been historically conquered, so there has been little contact with other languages. In general, languages influence each other and share similarities, but Japanese is considered an isolated language.
  3. Japanese began to be written as Japanese in the Nara period(about 1300 years ago), when works such as the Kojiki (an early Japanese chronicle of myths, legends, etc.) were written. Before that, classical Chinese texts called Kanbun were used. People spoke Japanese but wrote in Kanbun.
  4. Spoken Japanese is said to have been completed about 2,000 years ago during the Yayoi period. However, since all knowledge and history was passed down orally, it is difficult to trace its roots. Among these, the Ryukyu language is considered to be the ancestor of Japanese. Ryukyu language is used in places like Okinawa Prefecture, and traces of ancient Japanese can be seen in it. Today, however, Ryukyu language is often considered a dialect of Japanese, and more research is needed to unravel the origins of Japanese.
