日本では2024年7月3日から新紙幣が発行されます。前回これが行われたのは2004年11月1日で、前々回は1984年11月1日でした。改刷は、約二十年に一度のペースで行われているのです。
一万円札には「日本資本主義の父」と呼ばれる渋沢栄一。五千円札には日本の女性高等教育の先駆者となった津田梅子。千円札には世界で初めて破傷風（ある危険な病気）の菌の培養に成功した北里柴三郎の絵がデザインされています。
新紙幣に変わる理由は、偽物の紙幣が作られるのを防ぐためです。偽物のお金が広く出回ると、お金としての信用性が低くなったり、被害を受けてしまう人が出たりするため、それらを防ぐために紙幣が新しくされます。
小売店や飲食店などでは、新紙幣に対応する機械やシステムに更新する必要があります。しかし、更新には費用がかかるので小規模事業者からは懸念の声があがっています。
一方で、新紙幣の発行はキャッシュレス決済システムの導入を促進する一面もあるため、社会で広がっているキャッシュレス化の波を考えると、システムを更新する良い機会になると考えられます。
新紙幣が発行された後も旧紙幣は使用可能です。使用期限などもありません。しかし、旧紙幣の流通量は減って新紙幣の流通量が増え続けるので、旧紙幣を目にする機会は少しずつ減っていくでしょう。

New banknotes will be issued in Japan from July 3, 2024. The last redesign was on November 1, 2004, and the one before that was on November 1, 1984. The redesign is carried out at a pace of once every 20 years.
The ten thousand yen bill features Eiichi Shibusawa, known as the "father of Japanese capitalism". The five thousand yen bill features Tsuda Umeko, who became a pioneer of women's higher education in Japan. The one thousand yen bill has a portrait of Shibasaburo Kitasato, who was the first in the world to successfully cultivate tetanus bacteria.
The reason for changing to new bills is to strengthen anti-counterfeiting measures. If counterfeit money circulates widely, the credibility of the money decreases, and people who suffer damage appear, so redesign is carried out to prevent these.
In retail stores and restaurants, it is necessary to update machines and systems to correspond to the new banknotes. However, there are concerns from small business operators because it costs to update.
On the other hand, the issuance of new banknotes also has an aspect of promoting the introduction of cashless payment systems, so considering the wave of going cashless spreading in society, it is considered a good opportunity to update the system.
Even after the new banknotes are issued, the old banknotes can still be used. There is no set expiration date. However, as the circulation volume of old banknotes decreases and the circulation volume of new banknotes continues to increase, the opportunity to see old banknotes will gradually decrease.
