  2. Shibasaburo Kitasato was born in 1853 in what is now Kumamoto Prefecture. From a young age, he aspired to pursue medicine. After studying in Germany, he achieved numerous accomplishments in the field of bacteriology. He is particularly known for being the first in the world to successfully cultivate tetanus bacillus in pure culture and for establishing its treatment. This achievement earned him international recognition as the "Father of Bacteriology."

After returning to Japan, Kitasato established the first Institute for Infectious Diseases in the country, dedicating himself to combating diseases such as tuberculosis(diseases that cause prolonged coughing) and plague (diseases with symptoms like high fever). He also played a pivotal role in training many skilled doctors and researchers, laying the foundation for Japan's medical education. In 1962, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kitasato Institute, Kitasato University was founded.
