On July 3, 2024, a new 5,000-yen bill was issued, and Umeko Tsuda was chosen as its portrait. The reason for her selection is that her efforts to advance women's education and her significant influence on Japanese society have been highly regarded.
Umeko Tsuda was born in 1864 in Edo (now Tokyo). At the young age of six, she traveled to the United States with the mission sent by the Meiji government and received an education abroad. During her studies, she realized the importance of higher education for women, which was a rare concept in Japan at that time. After returning to Japan, Umeko Tsuda made it her mission to reform the educational environment for women, based on her experience as Japan's first female international student.
One of her greatest achievements was founding the Tsuda English Institute (now Tsuda University) in 1900. This institution aimed to provide women with the foundational knowledge needed to succeed in society and continues to produce outstanding female leaders today. In addition to her role as an educator, she was also active as a social activist, striving to improve the status of women.
