English Translation
  1. Suikawari is a game where a person covers their eyes with a towel or something similar and tries to break a watermelon with a stick while listening to the voices of the surrounding people. It is often played in the summer on sandy beaches, where a sheet is spread out and the watermelon is placed on top. After being blindfolded, the person spins around several times before starting the challenge.
  2. The person with the stick moves closer to the watermelon. However, because they are blindfolded, they cannot see where it is. That’s when the people around shout directions such as, “More to the right!” or “Straight ahead!” to help guide them.
  3. When the stick hits the watermelon, it’s a success. Once it cracks open, everyone shares the watermelon together. On a hot summer day, the sweet, chilled watermelon tastes absolutely perfect.
  4. Suikawari is a game enjoyed through cooperation. The blindfolded person moves while trusting the voices around them. Those giving directions also try to explain as clearly as possible. That way, everyone can have fun together. If you visit Japan in the summer, be sure to experience suikawari—it will surely become a special memory.
