七夕（たなばた）は、日本（にほん）で毎年（まいとし）7月（しちがつ）7日（なのか）に行（おこな）われる行事（ぎょうじ）です。この日（ひ）、人々（ひとびと）は短冊（たんざく）（細（ほそ）くて長（なが）い紙（かみ）) にねがいごとを書（か）きます。そして、それを笹（ささ）の葉（は） (bamboo leaves) にかざります。「勉強（べんきょう）がうまくいきますように」「家族（かぞく）が健康（けんこう）でいられますように」など、いろいろなねがいがあります。かざりには、星（ほし）の形（かたち）やきれいなひもなどもあります。

English Translation

Tanabata is an event held every year on July 7th in Japan. On this day, people write their wishes on tanzaku, which are long, narrow pieces of paper. Then, they decorate bamboo leaves with them. Wishes include things like “I hope my studies go well” or “I hope my family stays healthy.” Decorations may also include star-shaped ornaments or colorful strings.
The origin of Tanabata comes from an old Chinese legend. Orihime and Hikoboshi were a very close married couple, but they became so close that they stopped working. God became angry and said, "The two must not meet." However, it’s said that they were allowed to meet just once a year, on July 7th.
In Japan, celebration styles vary by region. For example, in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, the Sendai Tanabata Festival is held from August 6th to 8th. The town becomes very lively with lots of beautiful decorations.
Also, some people eat somen noodles on Tanabata. Since somen are thin and white, people say they look like the Milky Way.
Tanabata is a wonderful event where people can make wishes and enjoy time with family and friends.
