  1. Emma: That's lovely. But why is it called masking tape?

  1. あや「じつは、さいしょはこうじょうでつかうテープだったんだよ。たとえば、たてものや車（くるま）にペンキをぬるとき、マステをつかっていたんだ」
English Translation
  1. Aya: Actually, at first it was tape used in factories. For example, people used masking tape when they painted buildings or cars.

  1. あや「むかしのマステの色（いろ）は、白（しろ）とか青（あお）、黄色（きいろ）だったんだ。色（いろ）のかずは少（すく）なかったよ」
English Translation
  1. Aya: Long ago, masking tape came in colors like white, blue, and yellow. There weren't many colors.

  1. あや「ある日（ひ）、マステが大（だい）すきな三人（さんにん）の女（おんな）の人（ひと）が、こうじょうに来（き）たの。そして、会社（かいしゃ）に『たくさんの色（いろ）のマステをつくってください』っておねがいしたんだよ」
English Translation
  1. Aya: One day, three women who loved masking tape came to the factory. They asked the company, "Please make masking tape in many colors."

  1. あや「それから、いろいろな色（いろ）のマステができたよ。今（いま）は、いろいろな国（くに）の人（ひと）がつかっているよ」
English Translation
  1. Aya: After that, masking tape came in many different colors. Now people all over the world use it.

  1. エマ「へぇー、そうだったんだ。わたしも、手紙（てがみ）にマステをはりたい！」
English Translation
  1. Emma: Oh, I see. That's how it was. I want to put masking tape on letters, too!
