  1. 信号機は交通の安全を守るために欠かせない存在です。信号機の色はそれぞれ、「赤」は止まれ、「黄」は注意、「緑」は進んでも良い、という意味を表します。信号機の色は国際的な機関によって定められており、世界共通です。当然ですが、日本でも、進んで良いことを示す色は「緑」です。しかし、日本語では「緑」の信号は「青」信号と表現されます。この不思議な現象は、なぜ起こるのでしょうか。

However, in Japan, the "green" signal is expressed as a "blue" signal. Why does this curious phenomenon occur?
  2. It is said that there are several reasons for this, one of which is related to the Japanese expression of colors. In fact, it is said that ancient Japan originally had only four words to represent colors: white, black, red, and blue. With fewer numbers, the range of colors that one word referred to was broader than today. Therefore, the word "blue" has been used to refer to "green" from ancient times. For example, in words like "blue apple," "blue vegetables," and "blue worm," green apples, vegetables, and worms are expressed as "blue."
  3. Thus, the historical background where the word "blue" referred to a wide range of colors including "green," affects how modern Japanese people express the color of traffic lights. The actual color of traffic lights is "green" according to international standards, but in Japan, the traditional way of naming colors is respected, and it is called a "blue signal."
